Orientação: Gaia Giuliani e Francesca Esposito

Programa de Doutoramento: Human Rights in Contemporary Societies

In the context of transnational migrations and refugee flows towards European Union, this project investigates how the European border regime in both its union and national dimensions implements, or rather, prevents the full respect of Human Rights (HR). The project's timespan goes from the Syrian refugee crisis (2015) to the COVID-19 emergency and its aftermath (2022). The project features two national case studies: Portugal and Italy. The project conducts a documentary investigation of EU and national legal frameworks, procedures, and actions, as well as four phases of fieldwork consisting of interviews with:1.representatives from local/national/EU institutions, 2. Staff from border/health/legal services, 3. Migrants and refugees, and 4. Grassroots NGOs and associations.
