Specialisation and International Course - Epistemologies of The South | 8th Edition (2023-2024)

The Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra (CES) and the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) have established a partnership for the creation of the International Course in Epistemologies of the South, taught in Portuguese and/or Spanish, through e-learning.

We live in turbulent and complex times. The Epistemologies of the South propose to broaden the political imagination beyond the intellectual and political exhaustion of the global North. This exhaustion translates into the inability to face the challenges of this century and the threats to democracy, law and human dignity. The global South is a metaphor for human suffering caused by the great forms of oppression - capitalism, colonialism and heteropatriarchy - and the various forms of struggle and resistance to these forms of oppression. The Epistemologies of the South attempt to broaden the possibilities of rethinking the world from the knowledges and practises of the global South, challenging attempts at epistemicide, linguicide or epistemic subalternisation. In this scenario, Epistemologies of the South provide theoretical and methodological tools that enable the development of a critical diagnosis of the present that has as its constitutive element the possibility of reconstructing, formulating and legitimising alternatives for a more just and free society.
