This seminar is part of the series The Weft of Memory: dates to count,  organised by the coordination of the thematic line Europe and the Global South: heritages and dialogues. The series aims to mark and reflect on less resounding dates, but equally determinant for the construction of the 25th of April 1974 and the independence of Portuguese-speaking African countries and East Timor. The seminars take place online, whenever possible on the date to be marked, every month, at 16h00, throughout 2023.

The 16th of May marks the International Day of Life Stories. Elsa Lechner invites Professor Manuel Antunes da Cunha, from the Portuguese Catholic University in Braga, to reflect on the 25th of April and Portuguese emigration in France.

Bio notes

Elsa Lechner | PhD in Social Anthropology at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (2003) she is Associated researcher at Ces. Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Rutgers and Brown Universities, USA (2014/15), Co-coordinator of the Humanities, Migrations and Peace Studies Group at CES 2010-2014, and member of the Ces Permanent Scientific Committee (2010/14). FCT Post-doc Fellow at ICS and ISCTE (2003/2009). Her research focuses on identity processes in migrant contexts, migrant's suffering and resilience within emancipation processes, biographical research, intercultural dialogues, Portuguese emigration and immigration to Portugal, actions of migrant's inclusion and participation. Coordinator of a Gulbenkian research project on stories, memories, and innovation among Portuguese migrants. Author of various national and international papers and books on biographical research for the study of migrations. Presently she is dedicated to develop articulations between biographical research, health, arts and culture.

Manuel Antunes da Cunha is a professor at the Catholic University in Braga. He holds a PhD in Communication Sciences from the University Paris 2 (Panthéon-Assas), teaches Communication Sociology, Research Journalism, Political Communication and Research Methods. He is the coordinator of the Master's in Digital Communication, the post-graduate course in Communication in Professional Football (UCP-Liga of Portugal) and the internships for the Degree in Communication Sciences. He is also part of the Centre for Philosophical-Humanistic Studies (UCP). A specialist in Media Sociology, Reception Studies, Migrations and Qualitative Methodologies, Cunha is the author of three dozen publications and as many papers in national and international events and congresses. His book "Les Portugais de France face à leur télévision. Médias, migrations et enjeux identitaires" (PUR, 2009) was awarded the honorable mention of the Prix national de la recherche de l'Inathèque de France.
