Overview

Chronic illness has come to represent increasingly diverse and present conditions in Western societies. However, many aspects of this varied experience still need analysis both from a theoretical and empirical point of view. Based on the examples collected during my PhD research with LGBTQ+ young adults in Italy and Portugal, in this seminar I intend to reflect on the fluid and intersectional aspects that place the experience of chronic illness in a grey zone between visibility and invisibility, between health and disability. Considering these aspects allows us to challenge the concepts of time, accessibility and health, while rethinking forms of care, the role of sexuality and the intersections between different identity frameworks.

Note: "It was fabulous, what the body told" is extracted from  "What the body told", Rafael Campo (1996)
