In Memoriam

Graça Abranches (1945-2019)

December 8th, 2019

Graça Abranches, a researcher at CES for several years, died on December 8th.

At the beginning of the 80s, Graça Abranches, who was at the time a member of the editorial board of Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais, often kindly hosted at her place several meetings, where, among other issues, the inclusion in CES of lecturers and researchers in literary studies of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities was extensively discussed. A teacher of English Literature and a pioneer in the field of Feminist Studies, by then virtually non-existent at Portuguese universities, Graça Abranches was always keenly attentive to every slip, any incoherence, any lack of rigour. This was her permanent attitude as a CES researcher and the first CES owes quite a lot to her cunning perspective as a feminist scholar and intellectual. Research she carried out - on literature, didactics, women, language, culture and society - is indispensable reading.

Whoever had her as a friend - rigorous, demanding, loyal, solidary - knows well what a privilege it was. Her name is an ineffaceable part of the history of CES.
