July 2017

Presentation

The consortium of the Centre for Social Studies University of Coimbra (CES), in collaboration with the Department of Sociology of the University of Surrey (England), University of Strathclyde (Scotland) and the Alice Salomon University of Berlin (Germany), has just received 1.4 million euros allocated by the European Agency NORFACE - New Opportunities for Research Funding Agency Co-operation in Europe to study LGBTQ discrimination throughout life in Portugal, England, Scotland and Germany.

In what will be the first study of this extent, the research team, headed, in Portugal, by researcher Ana Cristina Santos (CES), will study the multiple discrimination processes that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people face in these countries in three moments of transition of life: from school to the first job; career progression in middle age; and the onset of retirement.

The project, entitled «Comparing Intersectional Life Course Inequalities amongst LGBTQ Citizens in Four European Counties» (CILIA – LGBTQ), will also examine how sexuality, gender identity and expression, social class, citizenship status and ethnic origins impact LGBTQ people throughout their lives.

It is expected that the outcomes will contribute to informed social policies as well as to the development of future research agendas to address gender and sexual orientation inequalities, funded under national and international competitions.
