In 1999, the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra – Associate Laboratory, created a biennial award for young researchers (up to age 35) from any one of the countries having Portuguese as their official language. The CES Award is designed to recognize high quality work in the field of the social sciences and humanities. One of its main goals is to promote the recognition of studies which, by their outstanding merit, contribute to the development of Portuguese-speaking scientific communities

The Jury for the 8th edition of the CES Award for Young Scientists having Portuguese as their Official Language was composed of the CES Director, Boaventura de Sousa Santos, and the Professors Cristiana Bastos (Institute for Social Sciences), Graça Carapinheiro (ISCTE-IUL), Leonardo Avritzer (Federal University of Minas Gerais) and Teresa Cruz e Silva (Eduardo Mondlane University).
