Seminar II | The Pulse of the Periphery

Memory and Resistance in the Peripheries

António Brito Guterres (Investigador DINAMIA)

October 29, 2024, 17h00 (GMT+1)

Online event

This webinar aims to analyse the relevance of collective memory as a mechanism of cultural resistance in urban peripheries. Using some national case studies, António Brito Guterres discusses how marginalised communities use memory to build identity and combat the systemic oppression to which they are subjected. Some of these initiatives include cultural festivals or public artistic interventions. In addition to this lens, the need to integrate public policies that recognise and support these practices will also be discussed, based on the principle that collective memory not only strengthens social cohesion but also sustains ongoing resistance movements against exclusion and marginalisation.
