March 21, 2019, 09h30
Seminar Room (Floor 3), CES | Sofia
Overview
The purpose of this Seminar is to provide a dialogue on the decolonisation of sociology from the results of the End Everyday Racism project at the University of Cambridge. This initiative is an independent research project developed by Ella McPherson and Mónica Moreno Figueroa, Department of Sociology, University of Cambridge. The project aims to generate, on the one hand, knowledge about how everyday racism works in a higher education institution, such as the University of Cambridge. On the other hand, this project aims to contribute to the reflection on the work of anti-racist activism of students and staff at the University, boosting the agenda of institutional change.
Bio Note
Mónica Moreno Figueroa is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow in Social Sciences at Downing College, Cambridge. She was born and raised in Mexico. An integral part of her academic work has been her commitment to explore different forms of engaged sociology with a deep concern for social justice. This approach has been used to develop articulations and projects aimed at making racism public as a strategy for its eradication. In the summer of 2011, she co-founded the COPERA-Collective to eradicate racism in Mexico, along with Emiko Saldivar (University of California, Santa Barbara) and Alicia Castellanos (UAM-Iztapalapa). The group has been developing a series of initiatives aimed at making racism, in its multiple forms, public in Mexico, articulating academia and activism.
