About

The Gender Workshops at the Centre for Social Studies have been open spaces of debate that seek to explore the epistemological potential of feminist perspectives in understanding social life. These have been approached from different social, political and cultural contexts, focusing on the dialogue between the most varied disciplines and areas of research.

In this X series (2019/2020), we propose a set of nine workshops in which the invited researchers critically analyse texts and feminist authors considered matrix for contemporary discussions, highlighting the voice and works of renowned authors such as Gayatri Spivak, Sara Ahmed , Sylvia Tamale, Lélia Gonzalez, Patricia McFadden, bell hooks, Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza, Silvia Rivera Cusincanquí and Judith Butler.

The list is not meant to be exhaustive or to set priorities. It is a starting point to revisit concepts and works that, in one way or another, have marked and continue to mark Feminist Studies, Gender Studies or Studies on Sexualities, along with many other names that, unfortunately, were not possible to include in this X edition of the Gender Workshop Series.

In accordance with the principles of the Centre for Social Studies, it is the purpose of this X Series of the Gender Workshop, 1) Promote innovative epistemologies and methodologies, contributing to the creation of instruments that lead to a critical feminist analysis of society; 2) Stimulate a feminist ecology of knowledges; 3) Strengthen relations with the Global South, by recognising the work of fundamental feminist authors who escape the most westernized academic circuits; 4) Stimulate science in and for society, broadening the involvement of civil society in scientific culture in view of social groups that are victims of oppression, discrimination and exclusion.

This X series also includes the Winter School “Feminist Ecologies of Knowledges II”, which will take place at CES - Alta and Graça - from  January 27 to 31, 2020.

Each workshop will take place at CES, between October 2019 and June 2020, usually on the last Thursday of each month (except in December 2019 and January 2020).
