Adapting the International Men and Gender Equality Survey (IMAGES), to urban settings of Post-Conflict and Urban Violence: "IMAGES-PC+UV"
Promundo and its partners propose to conduct research in a post-conflict setting (Maputo, Mozambique), and a setting of high urban violence (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) to generate nuanced analysis and more adequate violence prevention strategies on the connections among masculinities, violence, poverty, and inequalities in cities with high rates of violence. The mixed-methods research will feature adapting and applying the International Men and Gender Equality Survey (IMAGES) to both of these contexts (quantitative), and carrying out interviews and focus groups, in addition to a policy review (qualitative). IMAGES (developed by Promundo and the International Center for Research on Women) has been applied in seven countries to date and become an international reference for understanding gender and masculinities at the household level. Collaborating partners will be the Centro de Estudos Sociais (CES), our research consortium partner, and the Centro de Formação Jurídica e Judiciária (CFJJ), our local implementing partner in Maputo. A technical advisory board will include staff from the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), which will provide additional research consulting; Sonke Gender Justice Network; and the Emory University School of Public Health. Findings will be used to develop more innovative, effective, and inclusive policies and interventions focusing on low income young men and women. As such, the team will promote dialogue and exchange with practitioners in gender-based programming, and conduct two seminars (one each in Rio and Maputo) in order to widely disseminate results and reach the poorest and most vulnerable urban inhabitants.
Outputs will include peer-reviewed journal articles, policy briefs (in addition to a longer policy-relevant report), and two seminars (one in each city) with key policymakers. Trainings on applying the IMAGES survey will also be held in both cities.
In addition to longer publications, the partners will also publish short research briefings that will be distributed and disseminated on-live via various networks that Promundo coordinates (MenEngage: www.menengage.org; MenCare: www.men-care.org; and others).
