Since February 2023, the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra (CES-UC) has celebrated the LGBTQI+ History Month through exhibitions and other events aimed at promoting critical engagement with queer past. This year’s celebration, organized by project TRACE with CES North|South Library and the Sexualities Research Group, included the Exhibition, the screening of the internationally awarded documentay Outlasting- Living Archives of Older Queers and this international online seminar.
The seminar “International LGBTQI+ Memory, History and Solidarity” brings together representatives of LGBTQI+ history and memory initiatives from diverse contexts in Europe and beyond - to present their work and engage in a dialogue about queer history, addressing both local specificities and transnational dimensions.
The event emerged organically from connections established following the recent inclusion of TRACE coordinator Ana Cristina Santos and team member Pedro Fidalgo in the International Committee on LGBTQI+ History Months,, currently composed by representatives of 27 locations worldwide, 38 people each linked to a specific city, country or region around the globe. The breadth and diversity of this international network prompted the proposal of this timely online event to continue the conversation on our collective responsibility as well as the distinct challenges involved in preserving and mainstreaming LGBTQI+ history.
This event aims to foster comparative reflection, strengthen cross-border learning and collaboration, and to bring international solidarity in the field of LGBTQI+ memory and history work to the centre of academic reflection.
Organization: Research project TRACE - Tracing Queer Citizenship over Time: Ageing, ageism and age-related LGBTI+ politics in Europe (ERC)
