Faced with today’s crisis, what would Gandhi do?
Abhay Bang
The Lancet
Overview
Physician and activist Abhay Bang, pioneer of rural health in India, reflects in an article published in one of the most influential medical journals in the world, on what Gandhi would do in the face of the current crisis and the context of the pandemic that is its background. The author proposes a thought experiment based on the principle that guided Gandhi's life - "My life is my message" - in the form of a nine-point action programme: to free oneself from fear; to care for the sick; to march with those who suffer and are oppressed; social unity and among different faiths; I am responsible for my neighbours; to recognise when one makes a mistake; Gram-Swaraj, the small-scale economy; prayer. He concludes that we should not wait for Gandhi, but act on inspired by what he would do.
