Migration and the EU: Externalisation, Re-migration and De-protection
2025
The EU Pact on Migration and Asylum has normalised the externalisation of migration management and remigration, anti-migrant and anti-refugee rhetoric from right-wing extremist parties has entered mainstream discourse and political agendas from centre and left, and the policies of the European Union (EU) and EU member states tend to be increasingly restrictive towards migrants and asylum seekers.
How can we reflect on this transnational and EU-wide shift towards remigration and de-protection? What should be the position of the academic community that would not only be ethically just but also effective?
The Inter-Thematic Migration Group is organising a series of seminars to analyse the views and contradictions of EU migration policy. The seminar series analyses the impact of far-right politics on European migration policies and aims to develop a public, balanced and clear position on the most pressing issues of these policies. The seminar series consists of a first series of three events with the following focus: The Far Right and the normalisation of ‘remigration’, the EU migration policy, the experience of Ukrainian refugees.
