Apresentação

In the aftermath of the pandemic, the housing crisis is once again on the public agenda. In Portugal as in other countries, housing inequalities have been increasing in the past years mainly due to the increased use of housing as a financial investment, as a means for obtaining high profitability through renting or selling. The current crisis combines continued increases in rent prices aggravated by rampant inflation with increasing interest rates on mortgage credit.

Inequalities in housing are at the heart of the challenges that contemporary societies face in achieving social inclusion, full citizenship and healthy living insofar as the failure to fulfill the right to adequate housing compromises other human rights. Moreover, as the sociopolitical context and living experiences impact lay theories that guide action and organize social practices, i.e., housing social representations and practices, housing inequalities are also associated with important psychological, social, and political impacts.

The International Colloquium – Housing (and) Crisis: Interdisciplinary dialogues for theory and policy – intends to enable (inter)disciplinary dialogue aimed at the promotion of the effectiveness of public policies on housing by bringing to the discussion contributions from the social and political psychology, political economy, and financialisation studies.

Event organized within the scope of the project HOU$ING - Financialised housing in 21st century Portugal: Social representations, practices, and political stakes (EXPL/PSI-GER/0269/2021).
