Death of Paulo Varela Gomes
1 May 2016
The Board of Directors of the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra deeply regrets the death of Paulo Varela Gomes, critic, professor, art and architecture historian and former researcher of this centre, who passed away yesterday due to prolonged illness.
Considered one of the most significant contemporary Portuguese authors and art historians, also noteworthy were his extraordinary contributions in architecture, not only as a historian but also as a critic and disseminator.
His tenacious undertaking and oeuvre, resulting, for instance, from his relationship with the orient, particularly Goa, would prove to be seminal in many of his intellectual inflections carried out under CES, constituting an essential legacy, which will mark the world of Portuguese historiography.
Alas, the loss of someone of enormous intelligence, a humanist reference and an example of tenacious struggle as a political activist.
À sua família e amigos, o CES apresenta as mais sentidas condolências, deixando uma mensagem de profunda solidariedade. To his family and friends, CES's deepest condolences and utmost sympathy.
