The International Seminar on Culture, Art and Subjectivity (SICAS) is an academic and cultural initiative dedicated to debate, reflection, dialogue and the dissemination of knowledges and practices related to Cape Verdean cultural expressions, with a focus on the artistic, expressive and symbolic languages that make up the national identity. Its aim is to provide a meeting point for researchers, artists, lecturers, students, cultural practitioners and the community, fostering the exchange of knowledges and the debate on the role of culture and art in the construction of Cape Verdean subjectivity and identity, thereby contributing to the appreciation of Cape Verdean identity, the strengthening of collaborative networks, and the broadening of public and academic debate on culture, subjectivity and identity in Cape Verde.

The Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra is hosting this preparatory initiative for the 2nd International Seminar on Culture, Art and Subjectivity (II SICAS 2026), conceived as a space for meeting, listening and critical reflection on research, intellectual trajectories and experiences linked to the PALOP countries, in particular Cape Verde, the diaspora and the production of knowledge in Cape Verde (University of Santiago), in Brazil (Federal University of Bahia) and in Portugal (University of Coimbra). From a decolonial and interdisciplinary perspective, the proposal brings together PhD candidates, researchers and other participants interested in thinking of Africa as a territory of knowledge, memory, culture and critical creation, promoting dialogue between African, Brazilian and European experiences, as well as situated knowledge and practices committed to (re)existence, memory and social transformation. The initiative aims to share ongoing or completed research, to foster links between different disciplinary fields, and to collectively build a space for reflection on subjectivity, culture, art and decolonial epistemologies, affirming Africa not merely as an object of study, but as a living space for thought, creation and critical dialogue.
