New perspectives on female monastic architecture and heritage
November 21 and 22, 2024, 09h00-18h00
Centro Cultural Convento de São José (Lagoa, Algarve - Portugal)
Part of the CONVENTUS Project "New Perspectives on the former Convent of São José in Lagoa" this meeting brings together a wide and diverse group of researchers to discuss the latest approaches to the study of conventual architecture, including the exploration of knowledge regarding the new uses and meanings it has acquired over time, both before and after the secularization, as well as the challenges currently facing the musealization and management of this vast heritage.
The seminar will consist of three thematic sessions and a collective visit to the building of the former Convent of São José (now a Cultural Center), organized as part of the CONVENTUS project:
- Session 1. Between sacred walls: new interpretations of female conventual history, architecture and urbanism
- Session 2. Buildings of memories: the other histories, meanings and uses of conventual architecture
- Session 3. Heritage in the plural: the challenges of collaborative management of conventual heritage
- Session 4. Polyphonic collective visit and sharing of memories for the collective (re)construction of the history of the Convent of São José, with the presence of the CONVENTUS project research team and the local community.
