Masculinities in Perspective

December 16, 2023, 09h30-18h00

Keynes Room, Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra

Recently, men have become increasingly interested in pursuing individual and collective journeys focused on deconstructing hegemonic and dominant masculinity codes, allowing for new expressions of masculinity and active involvement in fatherhood, childcare, and the fight for gender equality.

But the current socio-cultural context shows us that, despite these efforts, men's participation in the division of labour and unpaid care is still significantly lower when compared to women's entry into formal, paid work, as a result of decades of feminist efforts. On the other hand, the proliferation of so-called masculinist groups - who claim the traditional and hegemonic figure of man - has caused a counter-response that has a high level of adhesion throughout the world, especially in younger men and boys.

Thus, the I Forum "Masculinities in Perspective" aims to bring together in Portugal research groups that have developed new knowledge about masculinities, as well as to learn about experiences of transformation in society, from schools, civil society organisations, public policies and their impact on building a more equitable society, where men play an active role in promoting equality.
