January 28, 2023, 16h00

Casa Municipal da Cultura (Coimbra)

About

In the context of student strikes for an end to fossil fuel energy, teachers' struggles for a greater valuing of education, and preparations for the 8th National Meeting for Climate Justice, which will take place in Coimbra on February 10-11, this talk will focus on the connections between education and climate justice.

The talk will bring together students from the climate strikes, teachers, and researchers to reflect together on the following questions: What is the role of education - and teachers, students, researchers, workers of the sector - in actions for climate justice? What is the role of school as a space for education and struggle, and why is closing schools on strike a tool for climate justice? What convergences can we leverage between climate justice struggles and education struggles? What transformations (in public policies, methodologies, strategies) are needed in the education system to tackle the climate crisis and promote climate justice?

The event will feature interventions from: Teresa Núncio (Lisbon Student Climate Strike), Sara Baquissy (Coimbra Student Climate Strike), Alice Gato (Movement "Fim ao Fóssil: Ocupa!"), Carla Malafaia (Centre for Educational Research and Intervention -CIIE, University of Porto), Graça Simões (Alice Gouveia School), and José Janela (National Federation of Teachers - FENPROF).

* This is one of the preparatory events for the 8th National Meeting for Climate Justice, which will take place in Coimbra on 10 and 11 February.
