Advanced Training Course

Reimagining institutions, practices and rights in mental health and psychiatry

October 10 and 11, 2022, 10h00 - 19h00

Lisbon, ADEB - Association for the Support of Persons with Depression and Bipolar Disorder

Overview

In the last decade, in some countries, mental health care reforms, as well as national and international debates on human rights in psychiatry have paid increasing attention to the knowledge and claims of users, associations and activists. In Portugal, this trend remains, however, largely theoretical and is still little known by professionals, caregivers, and the society in general.

Building on a partnership between the PSYGLOCAL project, ADEB, and Hearing Voices Portugal, this course is an attempt to bring together, in a collaborative way, experts by experience and professionals. Over two days, we will discuss ways of taking the invaluable knowledge of experts by experience to the center of debates on mental health and raise awareness on the human rights of users and survivors of psychiatry. The result of a joint work of researchers, representatives of user associations and activists, the course includes training sessions focusing on alternatives to psychiatric approaches, human rights in mental health, and the diversity of forms of expression of knowledge and experience.
This course will take place at ADEB's facilities in Lisbon and is intended for: professionals in the mental health area; researchers and students; people living with psychiatric diagnoses; caregivers; mental health activists; public interested in human rights.
