About

In the 1990s, "global" and "globalization" were terms that contributed to define an era and a project of expansion of the capitalist world. In this seminar, I will analyse how environmental social movements changed the meaning of the "global" from the mid-2000s on.

I will analyse successively four main meanings of "global" that mobilise various sectors of Western Europe and Latin America: global as a scale, as a holistic approach, as a growing integration of different regions of the world and as a "Global Era" that points to a structural change of social interdependence. I will sum up case studies of Buen Vivir in Ecuador, of critical consumers (in Belgium, France and New York), of environmental activists, of environmental NGOs in Brussels and of committed intellectuals
