About
There are, argue Giuseppina Raggi and Cristiano Gianolla, certain circumstances which make the statue of Father Antonio Vieira particularly disputed, particularly in the context of the Black Lives Matter movement. On the one hand, we have the controversial character of his historical figure and the colonial past that he evokes, but, according to the authors, the interventions to which the statue has been subjected are due, in part, to a symbolic process of criticism of the reaffirmation of a certain post-imperial imaginary that persists in Portugal.
