José Reis


Biography

José Reis holds a PhD Degree in Economics [1989] from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra, with the thesis titled "Os Espaços da Indústria: a regulação económica e a mediação local numa sociedade semiperiférica". Tenure since 1998. Graduated in Economics in 1978. He was President of the Coordination Committee of the Portuguese Central Territory [1996-1999], State Secretary for Higher Education [1999-2001] and Chairperson of the Scientific Council [1992¬ 1994 and 200-2004] and Director of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra [2009-2015]. He was Visiting Fellow in universities from the United States of America, France, Italy and Brazil. Currently, he is a member of National Council on Environment and Sustainable Development [2005- ] and coordinator of the PhD Programme on Governance, Knowledge and Innovation [2005- ]. Has been conducting research in three major areas: the organization and evolution of economic systems, considering the productive dynamics, labour and employment systems and provision; the globalization processes and the ways of interaction in the supranational framework; governance and the institutions of the market economy. Within these themes, he has been using the study of Portuguese economy, regional and territorial organization and the local productive systems and the ways of structuring economy as preferred reference indicators, with a view to obtaining labour and employment inclusion, creation of value, international relations, redistributive justice and institutional consolidation. Has participated in over 30 research projects or consultancy works, in different areas, namely, agriculture, labour and economies organization, local labour and production systems, industrial internationalization and modernization, core-periphery relationships, globalization, governance and public policies, regional strategies, sustainable development, crisis and financialisation. Has directed or directs around 20 doctoral theses or master's dissertations in the following subjects: industrialization, local development, innovation and organizational dynamics, public policies, territory, social economy, microcredit, urban policies and institutions. Has been an elected member of dozens of academic juries in Portuguese and foreign universities, in a wide range of scientific areas, including, besides the already mentioned, economic history, income distribution, industrial networks, employment and unemployment, agro-food systems, cooperativism and cooperation, wage relation, competitiveness and markets, housing, public expenditure, economic growth and regional planning. He was a speaker in dozens of conferences, lectures and communications in universities and national and international academic conferences and seminars, syndicates, business associations, municipalities, associations, public institutions, on his research themes and on topics at the centre of public debate, recently emphasising themes on crisis and on the recovery of societies and economies, of labour and employment, of Europe and Portuguese economy. The seven books that he authored and co-authored reflect the above-mentioned subjects. Six are on the ways of organizing production and labour, and another is on institutions and governance, of which the following stand out: Os Espaços da Indústria: a regulação económica e o desenvolvimento local em Portugal, Porto, Afrontamento, 1992; Imigrantes em Portugal: Economia, Pessoas, Qualificações e Territórios.
