Alexandre de Sousa Carvalho
Biography
Alexandre de Sousa Carvalho is a researcher at the Center for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra. At CES, he was a member of the Decode/M project team where he facilitated the thematic area on "Populism and Extreme Masculinities" and actively participated in the core study and in the thematic areas "MeToo" and "Fatherhood, Domestic Roles and Care". He is currently a member of the research project UnCover - Sexual Violence in the Portuguese Media Landscape. Since September 2023, he has been part of the Masculinidades.pt Observatory, where he is the Observatory's communications coordinator and a member of the research team for the EMiNC project (Male Involvement in Care Initiatives). Since February 2017, he has been a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Coimbra. First in International Relations and Peace, Development and Security Studies at the Faculty of Economics, having also supervised and argued Master's dissertations in these scientific areas. Lately he has been lecturing in the Faculty of Arts and Hmanities for the degree in Journalism and Communication, where he taught Media and Contemporary Culture and Introduction to Political Communication. He is a PhD candidate in Political Science at ISCTE-IUL, has a Master's degree in African Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Bradford in the UK and has a degree in International Relations from the University of Coimbra. He has more than 15 years of research and consultancy experience in academic research centers, research institutes, government agencies and non-governmental organizations, and as an expert consultant on more than 30 reports for international development agencies and European Commission directories. His areas of expertise include international relations; critical theory; political science; peace and security studies and power sharing. His current research interests center around discourses, semiotics and political representations; internet and social transformation; and gender studies with a focus on masculinities.
