Biography

Alexandre de Sousa Carvalho is a researcher at the Centre for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra and Communications Manager at the Social Incubator for Research and Innovation. Within CES, he was part of the Decode/M project team, where he facilitated the thematic area on 'Populism and Extreme Masculinities' and actively participated in the core study and in the thematic areas "MeToo" and 'Fatherhood, Domestic Roles and Care.' He is currently a member of the research project UnCover - Sexual Violence in the Portuguese Media Landscape. Between September 2023 and May 2024, he was communications coordinator for the Masculinidades.pt Observatory and a member of the research team for the EMiNC (Male Involvement in Care Initiatives) project. He was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Coimbra between 2017 and 2023. First (2017-2021) in International Relations and Peace, Development and Security Studies at the Faculty of Economics, where he also supervised and examined Master's theses in these scientific areas. Subsequently (2021-2023), he taught on the Journalism and Communication degree course, where he taught Contemporary Media and Culture and Introduction to Political Communication. He holds a diploma in Advanced Studies in Political Science from ISCTE-IUL, a Master's degree in African Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom, and a degree in International Relations from the University of Coimbra. He has more than 15 years of research and consultancy experience in academic research centers, research institutes, government agencies and non-governmental organizations, and as an expert consultant on more than 30 reports for international development agencies and European Commission directories. His areas of expertise include international relations; critical theory; political science; peace and security studies and power sharing. His current research interests center around discourses, semiotics and political representations; internet and social transformation; and gender studies with a focus on masculinities.
