Gender Inequality

Ongoing Projects at CES

Gender inequality remains today a relevant source of social exclusion, undermining human rights, citizenship rights and the dignity of a very significant group of the population. And while it is clear that national and international legal frameworks have progressively sought to promote gender equality, it should not be ignored that (hetero)patriarchy remains one of the most resistant and transversal forms of silencing and subordination in different societies. There are several evidences of the active permanence of patriarchal relations in society: women are still excluded from decision-making centres; there is an unequal valuation and recognition of the roles, tasks and functions performed by women and men; significant sexual segregation of the labour market persists; gender stereotypes are widely disseminated in the media; the high numbers of violence in intimate relationships and sexual violence; cases of homophobia and transphobia; among many others. The consequences of patriarchy must also be analysed taking into account other inequalities that are lodged in the dominant structures and values of our societies, in particular, capitalism and colonialism, and the way they are articulated to produce invisibilities and degradation.

The Centre for Social Studies (CES) has produced research which seeks to account for these inequalities, emergencies and invisibilities in multiple areas, such as education, the labour market, the public and political space, the media, the family, academia, justice, the humanities, health and the intimate sphere. This Dossier aims to bring together the research projects, currently underway at CES, which reflect on inequalities arising from gender identity and/or sexuality, and how these intersect with variables such as social class, ethnicity, nationality, functional diversity, religion, among others. These projects aim not only to contribute to the knowledge produced in this area, but also to define intervention strategies to combat these forms of discrimination and revitalize the rights and dignity of these social groups.
