Angela Guerreiro


Biography

Angela Guerreiro, an Afro-descendant, of Angolan and Portuguese ancestry, mother, independent artist, mentor, curator of festivals and conferences, producer and therapist, was born in Lisbon in 1965. She trained in classical dance according to the Royal Academy of Dance system (1975-86), studied at the Escola Superior de Dança in Lisbon (1986-89) and at the Center of New Dance Development in Arnhem (1989-91). Master's degree in Dance and Movement Therapy (2015). Completed her training in Somatic Movement Therapy Training (DE-SMTT) and started the Baby/Kid BodyMind Dancing™ somatic education program (2019), a new branch of the method BodyMind Dancing™, founded by Dr. Martha Eddy. Starts PhD course in Post-Colonialisms and Global Citizenship, Center for Social Studies, University of Coimbra (2023). Was a performer at João Fiadeiro's company RE.Al (1991-94). Moved to Germany where she was resident choreographer at the Kampnagel Hamburg (1995-2002). The solo works 'Exposure' and 'Memory Play' (2003-2005), were created and performed in an alternative space in Hamburg, and collaborated with the musicians Sven kacirek, Beat Halberschmidt and DJ Neda, and the artists Fiona Gordon, Rosiris Garrido, Thomas Marek and Leila Pantel. Initiates the festival 'DanceKiosk-Hamburg' (2005), with its last edition held at the Deichtorhallen Hamburg gallery (2016). Under the umbrella of the festival 'DanceKiosk-Hamburg', produced the projects 'Kiosk.Company', 'DanceKiosk. Goes Island', 'Tracing Dance from Addis Ababa to Nairobi and Hamburg', 'dance beyond borders' and 'SURVIVING DANCE - Art - Economy - Politics'. In 2011, DANÇA magazine called her "one of the last independent activists in contemporary dance". Her project 'The Live Legacy Project: Correspondences between German Contemporary Dance and the Judson Dance Theater Movement' was funded by Tanzfonds Erbe, Kulturstiftung des Bundes (2013-2014), culminates with a Symposium at Tanzhaus nrw Düsseldorf from 7-12.07.2014. Produced the film 'The Live Legacy Project - Film documentation', premiered at Tanzkongress Hannover 2016. Performer/creator in Frank Castorf's production 'Faust' at the Volksbühne Berlin (2017). The film project 'WIR', is funded by Munich's cultural department (2020). Research grant recipient for the durational installation 'Me and My White Skeleton', about the presence of black bodies in Europe (2020). The project 'Digitizing the Archive from 1994-2016 - Angela Guerreiro Productions (AGP)', is funded by the NEUSTART KULTUR, DIS-TANZEN program (2021). Co-curator of the Festival 'BODY IQ 2021-Bodies of Cultures, Communities & Places', Somatische Akademie Berlin. Invited researcher for the project 'Dança não dança-arqueologias da nova dança em Portugal', curated by João dos Santos Martins, Ana Bigotte Vieira, Carlos Manuel Oliveira and Ana Dinger, for the exhibition at the Gulbenkian Foundation from October 30, 2023 - February 25, 2024. Guest speaker at the conferences: 'On comparing the German and Portuguese models in terms of public cultural policies, funding for artistic creation and ways of seeing, understanding and making art' (Espaço do Tempo at the Goethe-Institut Lisbon); 'ENCONTROS PARA O FUTURO V: Danca(s) Contemporanea(s) Diáspora e Afrodescendência no contexto artístico Portugues' (Estudios Victor Cordon, Lisbon). Part of the artistic and production team of 'Terreiro-Laboratório de Rituais' (2023), a project by UNA-União Negra das Artes, funded by DGArtes, the Ministry of Culture and with the support of Espaço Alkantara. Member of the association UNA - União Negra das Artes.
