Memory, violence and identity: new comparative perspectives on modernism
This project researched the period in the early twentieth century characterized by radical changes in science, politics, social customs, literature and art and generally referred to as “Modernism.” Individual projects dealt with
the following: the poetic construction of the gender and sexuality of the national subject in Portuguese and American Modernism; violence and poetic memory in Austrian and Portuguese Modernism; race; ethnicity and
resistance in African-American Modernism and contemporary Lusophone and Anglophone African writing; national memory and its repression in American, Portuguese and Brazilian modernism; the metaphor of the
window and liminality in Portuguese, Irish and American Modernism.
The international colloquium “Modernismos/Modernisms”, held in Coimbra, CES/FLUC, 3-4 June 2005, involving guest speakers in addition to the research team, who later contributed to the volume/conclusion of the project,
Translocal Modernisms. International Perspectives, intro. Françoise Melzter, Peter Lang, 2008.
