ALCORA
New Perspectives from the Colonial War: Secret Alliances and imagined maps

Period
September 1, 2010 to December 31, 2011
Duration
16 months
Abstract

This project aims at deepening the knowledge about the terms of the “Alcora Exercise”, an alliance, never publicly recognized, established between Portugal, South Africa and Rhodesia during the Colonial War. Thus, the project will focus on the new perspectives that the "Alcora Exercise" offers to understand the violent post-colonial order in Southern Africa, as well as the consequences of the geopolitical dynamics of Colonial War - as a "subsystem" of Cold War - for the present foreign policy. The debate promoted by this project becomes relevant because in 2011 50 years have passed since the beginning of Portuguese Colonial War.
