António Dornelas Prize

Book resulting from the EmployALL project awarded with the 6th edition of the António Dornelas Prize

December 2022

The work O Trabalho Aqui e Agora: Crises, Percursos e Vulnerabilidades, resulting from the research project "EmployALL- A crise do emprego e o Estado Social em Portugal: deter a produção de vulnerabilidades sociais e de desigualdades", of which the Centre for Social Studies (CES) of the University of Coimbra (UC) was part, was one of the winners of the António Dornelas Prize (2022).

Authored by Renato Miguel Emídio do Carmo, Jorge Manuel Alves Caleiras, Isabel Maria Bonito Roque (CES researcher) and Rodrigo Vieira de Assis, the study, published in book form by Tinta da China, «(...) looks in a multidimensional way at the dynamics of the labour market in the present, from the paths of 53 workers, proposing as a counterpoint the foundations of a policy of reconquest of time lived and the reinforcement of the centrality of work. By questioning some pre-established narratives, the book identifies the way in which regimes of precariousness are formed and crystallised, and shows how many of the labour and living situations of today refer back to ancient and recondite temporalities, reminiscent of agricultural day labour, deprived of rights and of any formal framework.»
This research, resulting from the partnership between the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES) of the ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE-IUL), the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon (ICS/ULisboa), the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra (CES.UC) and the Research Centre in European Economic Financial and Tax Law of the Institute for Economic Financial and Tax Law of the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon (IDEFF), had the financial support of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT/MEC) through national funds.

This prize, awarded by the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security, through its Office of Strategy and Planning (GEP-MTSSS), aims to honour the university professor António Dornelas, sociologist, specialist in labour issues, coordinator of the 2006 Green Book on Labour Relations, researcher at the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology, adviser to the President of the Republic for Labour and Social Affairs and Secretary of State for Labour and Training.
