Taking Giorgia Meloni's political stances on gender, migration and reproductive rights as a starting point, this talk critically examines scholarly approaches to the convergence of anti-immigration and anti-gender agendas among various political actors. Through a thorough critique of the main frameworks of femonationalism and homonationalism applied to understand the far right's appropriation of women's and LGBTQ+ rights, the talk appeals to scholars of the far right to move beyond framing gender as a 'symbolic glue' and instead deploy Sophia Siddiqui's notion of reproductive racism. The talk concludes by demonstrating how the concept of reproductive racism best illuminates the intersecting, colonial-rooted relations between family structures, reproductive rights and migration policies.

Bio note

Maria Elena Indelicato (she/her) is a CEEC FCT researcher at the Centre for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra. She is an interdisciplinary race feminist scholar who has lived and worked on various continents. Her scholarship specialises in writing histories of the present on topic as diverse as border and migration regimes, state-sponsored anti-racism and, lastly, the history of affect and the related uses of the sentimental politics of representation.
