Scientific dissemination in non-formal education spaces to promote sustainability and inclusion

Overview
The scientific community and international institutions have drawn attention to the genuine socio-environmental emergency of the planet we live on and the need to contribute to the formation of an aware citizenry in order to achieve sustainability. They also emphasise the importance of quality science education accessible to everyone and that values science as an ally in achieving the goals of a more just society.
In this context, non-formal education spaces, such as Museums and Science Centres, are considered conducive to scientific dissemination and the promotion of Education for Sustainability. These spaces enable people to seek solutions to tackle the planetary crisis and move towards a sustainable society. Our studies and actions have sought to promote scientific knowledge applied to everyday life in a non-school setting as a way of contributing to science education that reaches all people. This includes the training of teachers who are better prepared to educate for sustainability. I will present some of the initiatives we have developed with different audiences and communities, trying to include different voices, bodies, and experiences in the construction of engaged citizenship, to reflect on the role of these spaces in teacher training and education for citizenship and sustainability.
Bio note
Magnólia Araújo is a Full Professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (2021), working in the area of Biology Teaching with an emphasis on the environment. She has a Master's degree in Aquatic Bioecology and a PhD in Ecology and Natural Resources. Araújo completed a post-doctorate at the University of Coimbra in Science Teaching/Education for Sustainability. She has studied topics in Environmental Microbiology and focused her postgraduate research on Education for Sustainability and the dissemination of science in non-school teaching spaces.
