Jonas Van Vossole
Biography
Jonas Van Vossole is a sociologist, economist and doctor in Political Science. He is an FCT-CEEC indivual researcher at the Center for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra, Portugal, and part of its Political Ecology - ECOSOC research group. He detains a master degree in Political Science and a master in Complementary Economics, both from the University of Ghent. These are complemented with a postgraduate degree in advanced studies of democracy in the XXI century at the University of Coimbra. Jonas' main research interests concern the study of democracy, social movements, social protests and critical theory, political economy and political ecology. His PhD research focussed on the influence of the euro crisis on democratic legitimacy in Southern Europe, and Portugal in particular. He completed a pos-doc research in Sociology of Labour and Ecology at CES. Jonas Van Vossole has published 5 articles in peer reviewed journals, 8 book chapters. Two more articles and 1 book-chapter are under review. Jonas is currently finishing a monograph on Crisis and Democracy in Portugal which is under book contract with Brill publishers. Since 2023 Jonas is co-coordinator of the Ecology and Society (ECOSOC) research lab on Political Ecology at CES, and is regional coordinator of the Portuguese Association for Political Economy for Central Portugal. He is a member of the ECPR standing group of South European Politics and of Democratic Innovations, the SHIFT Cost Action network and the Observatory of Labour and Living Conditions, OCTV - UNL. His current research project - Nature and Labour - aims to understand and propose Trade Union democracy as an alternative to the Democratic and Ecological crisis of Capitalism. Jonas has collaborated with the Just2CE Horizon 2020 research project and been an invited lecturer on Capitalism, Social Class and Democracy and on Ecology and Labour in different undergraduate and doctoral courses at the Faculty of Economics at Coimbra University. He has presented his work in international conferences in Portugal, Spain, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Greece, Italy, the United Kingdom, the United States and Brasil.
