Filipa Queirós
Biography
Filipa Queirós is a sociologist, a PhD in Sociology from the Faculty of Economics, University of Coimbra and a researcher at the Centre for Social Studies where she co-coordinates the outreach program Ciência Viva at CES. Within an approach from the social studies of science and technology and from the social studies of surveillance, her research explores the role of science and technology in monitoring populations. Exploring the ethical, regulatory, political and societal challenges emerging from the uses of emerging technologies in the context of criminal investigations, she has been addressing issues related to the expansion of surveillance technologies and instruments of social control by the State; the role of the expectations of the actors responsible for innovation in shaping certain futures; the materialization of criminal bodies; the interrelations between race, science and technology; the construction of criminal suspicion through racialization and the exacerbation of social inequalities in the criminal justice system. In 2021, she has awarded a Grant from the "Scientific Employment Stimulus" Junior Category (4th Edition) promoted by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia). Since 2022, she has been developing research exploring the use of facial recognition technology by law enforcement in Europe. Particularly, analyzing how privacy, the construction of suspicion and social control are being formulated, constructed and (re)configured in the face of a global scenario of increased state surveillance.
