Rui Carvalho

Biography

I am a sociologist and a geographer. Overall, my research focuses on issues of community and urban development, globalization and transnationalism, international migration, race and ethnicity, and social theory. My doctoral dissertation project investigated how racial inequalities shape international migration outcomes, focusing on the case study of Brazil and using several qualitative and quantitative sources and methods of social research. Alongside my main focus on the CO3 project, my present research examines attitudes towards immigrants and immigration in Europe, and how international migration outcomes are shaped by various sources of inequality. In line with these research projects, my teaching has spanned issues of development and global social change, race and ethnicity, and social theory and research methods, often resorting to the use of community and arts (Hip-Hop) based pedagogical tools.
