Roberto Santos
Biography
I am a researcher and specialist in organized crime, firearm control policies, and public security, with over two decades of experience spanning law enforcement, public policy formulation, and academic research. I began my career as a civil police officer in Rio de Janeiro and later joined the Federal Police, where I worked in various sectors, including the regulation of the firearms trade. I am currently on leave to pursue a PhD in 21st Century Democracy at the Center for Social Studies (CES). My academic background includes a Law degree from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) and postgraduate studies in public security management and criminal justice at the Fluminense Federal University (UFF), criminal law and criminology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), and organized crime at the National Police Academy (ANP/PF). I also hold a Master's degree in Political Sociology from the State University of Northern Fluminense (UENF) and have completed advanced courses on illicit markets at the University of São Paulo (USP). I was part of President Lula's transition team following his most recent election, analyzing changes in firearm control policy, and I currently serve on the Board of the Brazilian Forum for Public Security (FBSP). I also collaborate on an ad hoc basis with organizations such as the Sou da Paz Institute and the Parliamentary Front for Firearms Control in Brazil's National Congress. Through books, book chapters, academic articles, opinion pieces, and contributions to news reports in both print and audiovisual media, I seek to contribute to the development of public policies that promote safer societies with the protection of rights and respect for democracy.
