About
Based on the theme "Feminist Arts of Words", the XI edition of the Gender Workshop Series proposes a series of monthly talks, around feminist, gender and colonial issues, with authors and other curators of the arts of words. In this session, we will talk with Yara Monteiro, based on her work.
Bio note
Yara Monteiro was born in Huambo, Angola. She is an author and visual artist. Graduated in Human Resources, she worked in this area for fifteen years, until 2015. In Portugal since the age of two, when she moved with her maternal family to Seixa, the author has lived in Luanda, London, Copenhagen, Rio de Janeiro and Athens. She has been writing since she was a teenager. In Essa dama bate bué! (2018), her first published novel, she narrates the story of self-discovery of a young Angolan girl, black and lesbian who, growing up in Portugal, returns to Luanda in search of her mother, a former combatant in the War of Independence.
