Meeting

How are refugees represented in the media?

March 1, 2016, 09h30-17h30

Lisbon Urban Information Centre (CIUL) [Picoas Plaza - Rua Viriato, 13]

Framework

The way the news are presented influences how people interpret the reality that surrounds them. The path leading to the creation of representational spaces, or the legitimacy of the image of a given population, is never easy to outline. However, the discussion and consideration on what image to choose, which perspective, which focus, who to interview, is a daily practice of journalists, thus, media are key channels through which interpretations of reality are widespread and for the establishment of  the conditions for their presumption.

the media has dedicated much attention to the recent influx of refugees arriving in Europe, fleeing, essentially, from war contexts, demonstrating the importance of how certain messages are transmitted. Although not always homogeneous, some media discourses have contributed to mediate and legitimise racist anti-migration movements and the increasingly strict control of both the EU's external borders, as the temporary suspension of the Schengen Area. How do journalists working in the field of migration position themselves in this regard? What arguments or working conditions underlie these speeches? Are the cuts in funding of news reports abroad conditioning the way we receive news from other parts of the world? How do broadcasted images and discourses impact  the way we think?
