The emergence of women’s leadership in platform associations
Marilia Verissimo Veronese (Unisinos)
April 2, 2026, 15h00 (GMT+1)
Online event
The relevance of the topic lies in the contextual conditions of the expansion of platform capitalism, accentuated by the pandemic and post-pandemic context. Emerging associative models, which aim to achieve fairer profit-sharing and co-ownership of the enterprise to escape the exploitation practised by large investor platforms, have grown in number and diversified in their areas of activity (Grohmann, 2023). Previous research has identified the emergence of female leadership in self-managed enterprises and in the union organisation of categories such as app drivers.
The seminar addresses gender relations in this field and the sexual division of labour that highlights tensions in relational and legal terms, considering both feminism and trade unionism as historically contested political fields (Martins, 2021). Methodologically, in addition to reviewing recent literature in the field, we monitored the social networks of the initiatives and their leaders to identify potential interviewees for further in-depth interviews. It is already clear that, in a predominantly male field such as app-based delivery, women are competing and facing resistance in their communication strategies and in their efforts to create networks with government funding agencies and universities.
