Environmental Humanities: From Theory to Practise

April 7, 2022, 14h30 (GMT+1)

Online Event via Zoom

About

The environmental humanities examine how the natural world determines the intellectual and cultural lives of human beings and the influence of human ideas about nature on our behaviour towards the places in which we live.

In this talk we will explore these two strands of environmental humanities focusing on the concrete case of CES. In the first part, we will make a theoretical reflection on the role of research in fighting environmental destruction. How can a research centre contribute towards a change in the way we view the natural world? What tools are at our disposal as researchers to encourage a transformation in our societies' relationship with the environment? What concrete measures could be taken at CES to encourage urgent social and cultural changes in order to avoid an environmental catastrophe?

In the second part, we will draw up a document that will list a series of good practises and measures that could be adopted by CES in order to give visibility to the environmental issue, encourage debate on this subject, and contribute to a transformation of the destructive way in which modern human beings inhabit the planet.

This sixth talk of the Series Roundtable of Knowledges follows the workshop “Environmental Humanities and Contested Natures”, which took place on February 1. The talk will continue the debate initiated in the workshop to deepen a collective reflection on the concept of sustainability and its articulation with practise. We have invited researcher Patrícia Vieira to guide the session.
Because this is intended to be a moment of conviviality and informal discussion, and because the best ideas often emerge around the table, we suggest that you bring a drink or food to our "virtual table", for a snack shared at a distance.
