About

This colloquium aims to discuss and examine the silenced memories of the colonial war. Indeed, the war remains a difficult memory in Portugal. It took place in the context of a dictatorship that invested heavily in the ideological legitimisation of its colonial presence, while censoring opinion, imprisoning opponents and making processes of questioning the war invisible. The longevity of the war cannot be understood without keeping this in mind, just as understanding the change introduced following the 25th of April, a founding mark of the democratic regime, implies confronting the place the war had in its unleashing, but also how, in democratic Portugal, it was marked by selective memories, persistent silences and historical controversies.

[Free, but compulsory, registration until March 25th]

Organisers: CULTRA | Cooperativa Culturas do Trabalho e Socialismo and the project Crossed Memories, Politics of Silence: The Colonial-Liberation Wars in Postcolonial Times
