Overview

In the Brazilian governmental discourse, environmental protection policy of areas of sustainable use typology was created to contain the accelerated process of exploitation and dilapidation of the environment by preserving areas representative of natural biomes gauged in the technical-scientific knowledge that values the local knowledge and simultaneously  ensuring the conditions and means necessary to improve the quality of life of local people who have their own ways of life, production and social reproduction based on exploitation of natural resources.

The seminar will discuss how the Brazilian State has structured the policy of protected areas and ensured social goods and services, specially those related to  access of public health services of the populations living in these territories, based on the analysis of the preliminary results of the household epidemiological survey on the working, health and life conditions of the riverside populations, held in the second half of 2016 by researchers from the Leônidas and Maria Deane Institute, a scientific technical unit of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in the Amazon.

The field of theoretical and empirical reflection is the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve, which is one of the 71 Environmental Conservation Units of the State of Amazonas, located in the hydrographic basins of the Middle and Upper Solimões in the Northern Region of Brazil, which occupies an area of 1,124. 000 hectares (approximately 11,240 km²), where about 11 thousand people live in 200 communities and 1,873 households.

Marcílio Sandro de Medeiros é geógrafo, mestre em saúde público e servidor investigador do Instituto Leônidas e Maria Deane, unidade técnica científica da Fundação Oswaldo Cruz na Amazônia. É coordenador do Curso de Especialização em Saúde Ambiental na Amazônia e integrante do Laboratório de Territorialidades, Ambiente, Saúde e Sustentabilidade. Pesquisa temas relacionados as Unidades de Conservação e Vigilância Ambiental da Saúde sob a perspectiva da teoria da Determinação Social da Saúde. Atua no Fórum Amazonense de Combate aos Impactos dos Agrotóxicos e no Comitê Municipal de Enfrentamento Mortalidade Relacionada ao Trabalho no Amazonas.

Ivani Ferreira de Faria é geógrafa da Universidade Federal do Amazonas investigadora em gestão territorial atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: Diagnóstico Socioambiental em Unidades de Conservação; Planejamento e Mapeamento Participativo em Áreas Protegidas (Unidades de Conservação e Terras Indígenas); Ecoturismo de Base Comunitária; Gestao do Território em Terras Indígenas; Educação Escolar Indígena e Etnodesenvolvimento; e Geopolítica Ambiental. Faz parte dos Programas de Pós-graduação em Geografia e Ciências do Ambiente e Sustentabilidade na Amazônia. É bolsista da Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior do Brasil cursando a Cátedra Milton Santos na CES/UC.
