This seminar is part of the seriesThe Weft of Memory: dates to count, organised by the coordination of the research line Europe and the Global South: heritages and dialogues. The series aims to mark and reflect on less significant dates, but equally determinant for the construction of the 25th of April 1974 and the independence of Portuguese-speaking African countries and East Timor. The seminars take place online, whenever possible on the date to be marked, every month, at 16h00, throughout 2023.

On Guinean Women's Day. National Heroines, Silvia Roque offers a reflection on women, the nation and struggles in anti-colonial and post-colonial cinema in Guinea-Bissau. Silvia Roque has been working on Guinea-Bissau since 2006, and has developed projects in various areas within the scope of peace and violence studies, including the gender dimension. Concerning this seminar’s theme, in 2021 she published the article "Mulheres, nação e lutas no cinema anti/pós-colonial da Guiné-Bissau", Revista De Comunicação E Linguagens

Bio note
Sílvia Roque is Assistant Professor of International Relations at the University of Évora. She has been a researcher at the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra since 2008, where she was also a junior researcher between 2005 and 2007. Currently integrated in thematic line 3 and member of the Masculinities Observatory.

She was co-coordinator of the Humanities, Migrations and Peace Studies Research Group between 2016 and 2019. She was an Invited Assistant Professor of the Master's in African Studies, at ISCTE-IUL (2017-2019). PhD in International Relations from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra (2014), she received, in 2015, the CES Award for Young Social Scientists of Portuguese Language for her PhD thesis. She also completed an MA in African Studies (2007), at ISCTE-IUL-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, and holds a degree in International Relations from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra (2002). Since 2005 she has been working in research projects in the field of International Relations, particularly in the area of Peace Studies.

Besides Guinea-Bissau and El Salvador, countries where she has focused most of her research, she has also collaborated in research projects in Portugal and Mozambique. Furthermore, she has collaborated with civil society organisations and international organisations in conducting studies, training and cooperation aimed at understanding and reducing various expressions of violence.
