Presentation of the website on 'Territorial Vulnerabilities and Covid-19 in Portugal'

On 24 March, 2022 the website Territorial Vulnerabilities and Covid-19 in Portugal: Impacts on employment, society and economy is presented in the context of the initiative "Decommodifying work? From employment (in)security to social protection", which takes place at the Iscte - University Institute of Lisbon.

In the light of “EmployALL - The employment crisis and the Social State in Portugal: arresting the production of social vulnerabilities and inequalities”, a project in which the Centre for Social Studies (CES) is one of the partner entities, the website seeks to contribute to the understanding of the vulnerabilities and different impacts of the pandemic on the territories in Portugal. The study that underpins the website uses the municipal scale to define a typology of vulnerable territories according to the degrees of exposure and susceptibility they present, and compares the different groups of municipalities of this typology with the territorial impacts of the pandemic crisis in terms of unemployment dynamics.

The results show the existence of increased vulnerabilities in territories highly dependent on tourism and those which are part of metropolitan areas, whose socio-economic structures resulted in situations of higher unemployment growth in 2020 and 2021.
The analysis, which has implications for the reflection on territorial vulnerability, resilience and public policies, was conducted by José Maria Castro Caldas (CES, University of Coimbra & COLABOR), Hugo Pinto (CES, University of Coimbra and Faculty of Economics, University of Algarve), João Ferrão (University of Lisbon, Institute of Social Sciences) and Renato Miguel do Carmo (Iscte - University Institute of Lisbon, CIES-Iscte).

The research project "EmployALL - The employment crisis and the Social State in Portugal: arresting the production of social vulnerabilities and inequalities" (reference PTDC/SOC-SOC/30543/2017) is funded by FCT - Foundation for Science and Technology through national funds.
