CES CO-ORGANISES AHE Annual Conference
UC to host one of the leading international conferences on alternative economics in 2026
The Centre for Social Studies (CES), the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra (FEUC), through its research centre CeBER (Centre for Research in Economics and Management), and the Portuguese Association of Political Economy (EcPol) are organising the next Annual Conference of the Association for Heterodox Economics(AHE). The conference, scheduled to take place at FEUC from 1 to 3 July 2026, is one of the most significant international meetings dedicated to plural and critical economic thinking.
This will be the first time that the event has been held in Portugal and only the third time outside the United Kingdom, which represents an important international recognition of the work of the organising institutions. For three days, researchers from around the world will gather in Coimbra to discuss, in an interdisciplinary and pluralistic manner, the major economic and social challenges of today.
Founded in 1999 in the United Kingdom and Ireland, the Association for Heterodox Economics is an academic network that promotes a pluralistic view of economics and fosters dialogue among diverse theoretical currents. The research topics it addresses include: sustainability and climate justice; globalisation and regional inequalities; income, wealth, and innovation; power relations (class, gender, ethnicity, among others); economic crises and political alternatives; the history of economic thought and economic systems; finance, debt, value and uncertainty.
The AHE brings together members from Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia and Africa. In addition to the annual conference, it promotes training workshops for postgraduate students and participates in debates on pluralism in the teaching of economics. The latest editions of this conference took place at King's College London (2025), the University of the West of England (2024), Anglia Ruskin University (2023) and SOAS University of London (2022).
