In early 2024, a group of journalists revealed the close links between the German far-right party AfD and the extreme-right circles around the Identitarian Movement, that is known for spectacular racist stunts in the Mediterranean Sea, the French Alps, and elsewhere. The media report caused a major public outcry and a pro-democratic protest wave across the country. What shocked people most was AfD’s expressed commitment to the „remigration“ of immigrants living in Germany. This presentation focuses on how the AfD has mobilised the concept of remigration throughout the past decade. Drawing from the party’s electoral manifestos, it shows that AfD has demanded remigration for years - much longer than the public was aware of. Moreover, it explains the meaning of the concept of remigration for the contemporary far right, also tracing the idea back to Nazi Germany’s antisemitic policies („Madagascar Plan“). The presentation concludes by discussing AfD’s anti-immigration agenda within a European perspective.
