Workshop
Afrocentric epistemologies from the perspective of racialised researchers
December 17, 2024, 14h00
Room 1, CES | Alta
This workshop aims to bring together racialised doctoral and post-doctoral students to share and reflect on their research, promoting an enriching dialogue on Afrocentric epistemologies. The proposal comes as a continuation of the workshop “Afrocentred Epistemologies: Brazil-Portugal Research Experiences”, expanding the space for exchange between researchers, students and the interested public, with a focus on fundamental themes for understanding the racial and cultural dynamics that run through contemporary societies.
The workshop will address key issues related to the African diaspora, cultural heritages, post-colonial cartographies, ethnic-racial public policies, black and Afro-diasporic resistance collectives, African religiosity, black performance and corporealities, traditional communities, oralities, the prison system, racial literacy and anti-racist pedagogical practices in the educational context. The aim is to promote an intersectional and interdisciplinary discussion on the various forms of resistance to racism, but, more importantly, on how marginalised bodies resignify and reorganise themselves in territories marked by colonial supremacy, and how these resignifications shape and renew our research methodologies, with an emphasis on the contributions of black intellectuals.
With the participation of eight doctoral and post-doctoral research projects, in progress or already completed, from postgraduate programmes at the participating universities: Centre for Social Studies (CES) - University of Coimbra; Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies (CEIS20) - University of Coimbra; Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto; Kingston University London, the workshop is a privileged space for the exchange of knowledges and experiences between universities in Portugal and Brazil.
This event is made possible by the support of the Sandwich Doctorate Programme (PDSE) (PDSE/Capes), call no. 6/2024, which encourages and fosters scientific research as well as the internationalisation of knowledge.
By bringing together these perspectives, it not only contributes to the construction of new academic narratives on Afrocentric knowledges, but also outlines new paths for research and the valorisation of black voices and knowledges on the global stage.
