Monday | 13 November | Imaginaries of sexual violence

Roundtable with Sofia José Santos, Júlia Garraio, Rita Alcaire and João R. Pais (CCP)

Zaj (Islamic Republic of Iran) | Javad Ganji | 5’07’’ 
This short film tells the story of a girl who has a traditional family and has to get home early. She gets into a taxi, and the driver goes the other way ignores her words and makes the girl afraid. In the end, the girl faces the truth…
 

Tuesday | 14 November | Domestic violence

In that space I gave you (Portugal) | Catarina Marmelo and Luis R.T. Matos | 8’16’’
A symbolic visual and sonic essay on the emotional and existential ambivalence implicit in the perpetuating cycle of the act of domestic violence.

Cold Soup (Portugal) | Marta Monteiro | 9’51’’
A woman victim of domestic violence looks back at the years when she was married, recalling how difficult it was to stay afloat.

In the pink corner (Portugal) | Cláudia Rita Oliveira | 76’
The separation between Francisca and her ex-partner was the trigger for him to begin a cycle of persecution, harassment, and threats. The threats extend to Cláudia, Francisca's daughter, who questions the nature of this behaviour as resulting from a patriarchal system. The film questions the powerlessness of the woman sitting “In the pink corner” as the victim of an aggressor and a patriarchal system. As Simone de Beauvoir said: “No one is born a woman, she becomes a woman”.

Thursday | 16 November | Lived experience

My rage is underground (Portugal) | Francisca Antunes | 12’57’’
A performer draws a map whilst listening to the ambiance of a city. She creates a new and imagined place where she reflects on trauma and its link to the city.

Open Sky or Limited Space (Portugal) | José António Loureiro | 16’39’’
After serving a sentence in prison, where he suffered the consequences of loneliness and physical and emotional violence, Alberto is released. When he leaves, he looks destroyed, fragile, and submissive and is unable to abstract himself, at any time, from the violence he suffered. He lives in despair, in constant fear of returning to prison. Claustrophobia is also felt in the room where he sleeps and in the club where he starts working, although Alberto tries to escape it daily.

Conversation with José António Loureiro (director), Joaquim Nicolau (actor) and Francisca Antunes (director) moderated by Júlia Garraio and Rita Alcaire.

 

Friday | 17 November | One way forward

Open your mind (Portugal) | Ricardo Pinto Reis and Dânia Viana | 45’
As part of the SenteMente project, a group of women, some with psychological disorders, come together and resort to different artistic languages to build a biographical show. From the sharing of various experiences, a path of resilience and communion is traced, that aims to propose a reflection on personal and collective appreciation, social inclusion, and awareness of gender equality and, in particular, mental health.

Commentary by  Mattia Faustini (CES) and talk with Paula Pedregal (director and actress, artistic co-director of Chão de Oliva).
