Report of the workshop

In this first session we intended to present the project underlying the methodologies workshops cycle Roda de Saberes, with the creation of a community - Roda de Saberes community - and shared resource bases. Concerning the theme of the session, we intended to show some of the possibilities of the use of images in research.

The session had four moments. At first, the participants organized themselves into 5 groups and reflected on some questions about personal experiences with visual methodologies and shared personal knowledge and/or interests and motivations to use these methodologies. These reflections were then shared between all the participants and the two facilitators, who also shared some personal experiences in the use of the image in their investigations. Afterwards, the participants were distributed through 5 tables, each with a proposal for a practical exercise.

Both the potentialities and the challenges were debated from the perspectives and experiences of the facilitators and some participants, which enriched the discussion. A format several times mentioned, as a result of the experiences of facilitators and participants, was the use of images in the elicitation of multiple layers of results - photo-elicitation and photovoice. These methods, and particularly photovoice, are quite effective in mediating between researcher/research participant, with several examples in the scientific literature of good results with traditionally more excluded populations.
