Meeting

Portuguese unionism in the 21st century: new challenges and union responses

November 17, 2018, 14h00

Keynes Hall, Faculty of Economics - UC

Overview

This meeting is born out of a partnership between the BASE-Unitary Front of Workers and the Study Group on Labour Relations and Society of the Centre for Social Studies (RETS/CES) and intends to discuss unionism in Portugal today and the unionism we need in the face of current challenges. It seeks to bring union militants and workers' organisations together with researchers who study the trade union movement with a view to building bridges between militancy on the ground and science.

BASE-FUT is a platform of social animators whose objectives are the promotion of workers' rights and social dialogue and the deepening of democracy in its threefold political, social and economic aspects. The meeting is framed on the organisation's 44th anniversary.

The initiative is organised in two debates on topics that address the new challenges facing unions today: how to reach out to workers, especially those who are less present in the trade union movement, and how to outline new strategies for communication, including online tools.
